Kashmiri Female Student Assaulted At Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia, Mess Worker Detained

A 24-year-old Kashmiri female student was assaulted on the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in the national capital on Sunday evening.

A mess worker at the university, Abid (22), has been detained in connection with the incident, which took place outside gate number 8 of the campus, reported The Times of India. The MA student has not yet filed a formal complaint but is expected to do so today (Monday), after which an FIR will be registered, said a police official, as per the report.

The accused was detained the same night, the official added. The police official also suggested that the altercation stemmed from a personal matter, contrary to claims linking it to recent events in Kashmir.

AISA Condemns Incident

The All India Students' Association's (AISA) Jamia unit condemned the incident as an issue of serious security lapse.

They also criticised the security staff for allowing the accused to re-enter the campus unchecked after the assault. The students' body also linked the assault to alleged harassment of Kashmiri students following the Pahalgam terrorist attack, though the police have maintained it was an isolated personal dispute.

There has been no official response to the incident by the university administration.
