Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah power MI to a comfortable win over LSG
New Delhi: Mumbai Indians produced a clinical all-round performance to defeat Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs in their IPL 2025 encounter, keeping their playoff hopes very much alive.
After being asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians posted a commanding 215/7 in their 20 overs. Their innings was powered by aggressive contributions from several batters, with opener Rickelton setting the tone early. Rickelton smashed 58 runs off just 32 balls, peppering the boundary ropes with six fours and four towering sixes at a strike rate of 181.25. Although Rohit Sharma departed early for just 12, Rickelton’s fireworks ensured MI maintained momentum during the powerplay.
Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav kept the pressure on the LSG bowlers in the middle overs. Jacks contributed a brisk 29 off 21 balls before being bowled by Prince Yadav, while Suryakumar lit up the innings with a brilliant 54 from 28 deliveries, which included four boundaries and four maximums at a staggering strike rate of 192.86. Tilak Varma added a quick 6, and captain Hardik Pandya chipped in with 5 runs, but it was Naman Dhir’s late cameo (25 not out off 11 balls) that propelled Mumbai past the 200-run mark.
Among the LSG bowlers, Mayank Yadav was the most impressive, claiming 2 wickets for 40 runs, while Avesh Khan also took 2 wickets but conceded 42 runs. Digvesh Rathi and Ravi Bishnoi picked up one wicket each but were expensive, allowing Mumbai to pile on a daunting total.
Chasing a massive 216-run target, Lucknow Super Giants never really got going. They lost opener Aiden Markram early, caught behind off Jasprit Bumrah for 9. Mitchell Marsh tried to anchor the innings with a positive 34 off 24 balls, but once he fell to Trent Boult, the LSG innings began to crumble.
Nicholas Pooran briefly threatened with a rapid 27 off 15 balls, but his dismissal to Will Jacks derailed any momentum. Rishabh Pant tried to fight back with a spirited 42 off 21 balls, striking two sixes along the way, but he lacked support from the other end. Will Jacks was the unlikely bowling hero for Mumbai, picking up three crucial wickets — Pooran, Pant, and Ayush Badoni — to break LSG’s middle order.
Jasprit Bumrah continued his red-hot form, claiming 4 wickets for just 20 runs. His variations were too good for the LSG lower order as he cleaned up Abdul Samad and Avesh Khan with clever slower deliveries. Trent Boult also bowled with discipline, ending with impressive figures of 3/24.
Lucknow eventually folded for 161 in their 20 overs, falling well short of the target. Despite some late resistance from Prince Yadav (4 not out) and Ravi Bishnoi (13), the task was too steep for the tail-enders.
This comprehensive 54-run win boosts Mumbai Indians’ net run rate and keeps them firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants will need to regroup quickly if they are to stay alive in the tournament.
