Six held for kidnapping youth, seeking ransom; victim rescued

The Special Detective Unit has arrested six persons, including a woman, in connection with the kidnapping of a youth from Sinand village and demanding lakhs of rupees in ransom. The kidnapped youth was rescued.

Giving details while addressing a press conference, Kaithal SP Astha Modi said Naresh Kumar, a resident of Sinand village, filed a complaint regarding the kidnapping of his son and that a ransom was demanded. As per the complaint, his son frequently visited their relatives at Ujhana village. There, he became acquainted with Ankit from Ujhana, who introduced him to Sonu from Dhamtan Sahib. Sonu had promised to send his son to Canada for Rs 19 lakh.

On April 20, Naresh Kumar received a call from his son Ankit, asking to deposit Rs 1 lakh into his bank account, claiming that it was needed for fingerprint formalities as he had already travelled to Jammu. The money was transferred, but soon after, Ankit’s phone was found switched off.

On April 22, Ankit managed to call his father briefly, informing him that he had been kidnapped before the call disconnected. Shortly after, the kidnappers contacted Naresh, initially demanding Rs 25 lakh, later reducing it to Rs 12 lakh, the SP said.

A case was registered at the Kalayat police station and the investigation was handed over to the Special Detective Unit with instructions to ensure the speedy arrest of the culprits and safe recovery of the youth, she added.

Acting promptly, the team members used technical surveillance to track down and arrest Sumedha Sharma of Resham Nagar in Jammu, Harshvir from Sangrur in Punjab. Further interrogation led to the identification of other accused. Another police team arrested Amit from Choura, Jammu. Subsequent raids at the house of Shamsher at Jung village, Jammu, resulted in the arrests of Sonu of Dhamtan Sahib, Rajender of Jodian Khanuur, Jammu, and Shamsher Singh from Jung Ramgarh, Jammu. The kidnapped youth Ankit was safely recovered from their custody.

Investigation revealed that Sonu was in contact with Harshvir regarding Ankit’s plan to go to Canada. Following the plan, Ankit was taken to Jammu by bus and was picked up by Amit, who took him to Shamsher’s house where Rajender and Shamsher were already present, the SP added.
