Star cricketer clear message to BCCI after Pahalgam terrorist attack, asks cricket board to break all…
New Delhi: Sourav Ganguly, a former Indian cricket captain and BCCI president, advocates for severing all cricketing ties with Pakistan. He stated that strong action is needed, emphasizing the seriousness and unacceptable nature of recurring incidents of cross-border terrorism. India and Pakistan’s cricketing engagements have been limited to ICC and ACC tournaments in recent years.
India and Pakistan haven’t played a cricket series against each other since 2012-13, a period marked by tense political relations. Their most recent encounter was in the 2008 Asia Cup.
India opted to play their ICC Champions Trophy matches in Dubai using a hybrid model, rather than traveling to Pakistan.
ICC chairman Jay Shah has approved a hybrid model for all International Cricket Council events scheduled for India and Pakistan between 2024 and 2027.
In response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam resulting in 26 fatalities, the central government implemented several diplomatic actions. These included the closure of the Attari Integrated Check Post, the suspension of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani citizens (with a 40-hour deadline for their departure), and a reduction in the number of officers at both countries’ High Commissions.
Following a recent terrorist attack in Kashmir, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla confirmed that India will not engage in bilateral cricket matches with Pakistan. Bilateral series between the two nations have been absent since 2012-13, with the exception of participation in international tournaments. India’s refusal to tour Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy resulted in those matches, including the Pakistan game and final, being relocated to Dubai. The only upcoming encounter between the two teams will be during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
A spokesperson expressed solidarity with the victims of the unspecified event, stating their actions would align with the government’s response. They confirmed that bilateral cricket series with Pakistan are suspended indefinitely due to government policy, but participation in ICC events will continue as per ICC regulations and understanding.
