Kerala Home Nurse Arrested For Brutal Assault On Alzheimer's Patient

A home nurse has been arrested for the brutal assault of a 68-year-old retired ex-serviceman suffering from Alzheimer's disease in a shocking incident that came to light through CCTV footage. The accused, identified as Vishnu from Pathanapuram, was taken into custody on Friday night after the visuals showed him violently attacking the bedridden patient, Sasidharan Pillai, at his residence.

Pillai, who had been confined to bed for an extended period, lost consciousness during the attack and was rushed to a private hospital in Parumala, where he remains in critical condition in the ICU.

CCTV Footage Reveals Abuse

The abuse surfaced when Pillai’s family, worried over his sudden health decline, reviewed footage from a CCTV camera installed inside the house. The video revealed Vishnu dragging the elderly man across the floor, striking him with a stick and belt, and causing severe injuries to his head, face, and back, as per a report on Manorama. At one point, Pillai’s head is seen hitting the bottom of a staircase, worsening his injuries.

According to police from the Kodumon station, Vishnu was booked under Section 118 (causing hurt with dangerous weapons) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The action followed a complaint filed by Pillai's wife, who works in Thanjavur and had hired Vishnu through a private agency about a month ago to look after her husband, reported PTI.

Initially, Vishnu reportedly told neighbours that Pillai had suffered injuries after a fall. However, medical staff at the hospital grew suspicious of the nature of the injuries, prompting the family to check the surveillance footage, which ultimately revealed the assault.

In the complaint, the patient's wife said the attack may have stemmed from Vishnu’s resentment over instructions given by the family regarding the care of the elderly patient, including directives to quickly return home after outings, as per the agency report.
