Clean drains, repair roads by June 15, Mayor tells officials

Mayor Renu Bala Gupta directed the officials of the Sanitation Department to clean all the storm-water drains thoroughly before June 15. She also directed the officials of the engineering wing to make all the roads pothole-free before this date.

While chairing a meeting at Karnal Municipal Corporation office, the Mayor emphasised that the initiative is in line with the instructions of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to ensure monsoon preparedness.

The Mayor instructed officials to begin cleaning work immediately for drains where tenders have already been awarded. For other drains, she directed that estimates be prepared and tenders floated without delay. “Estimates should clearly mention all necessary details to avoid future issues,” she said.

Gupta made it clear that the desilting of drains must be comprehensive. She also instructed that drains recently constructed should be cleaned by the agencies responsible and there should be no construction debris in those. Specific orders were given to start cleaning work at Mughal Canal, Ram Nagar drain and drain number 1.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the Mayor mandated videography of all drains before and after cleaning. Supervisors must be present during the cleaning process with engineers regularly inspecting the sites to ensure quality execution.

She further directed the creation of teams of dedicated workers in each zone for the cleaning of small drains. Proper maintenance and functioning of all disposal pumps and rainwater harvesting systems in the city were also emphasised. The cleaning of old storm lines and manholes across different wards, as well as ponds and drains in village areas, is to be completed before the monsoon.

For low-lying areas, she instructed officials to arrange gensets for dewatering purposes. She also called for the purchase of small jetting machines to clean narrow drains in the older parts of the city.

In addition to drain cleaning, the Mayor directed that all roads in the 20 municipal wards be made pothole-free. She also reviewed ongoing repair works in various wards and asked for the repair of parks and open-air gym equipment.

“All works should be carried out as per the prescribed standards and physical verification must be conducted before starting any task,” she said. The respective ward councillors will visit the sites to monitor the progress of the cleaning operations.

Mayor Renu Bala Gupta assured that the entire drain network would be cleaned before the onset of monsoon to prevent waterlogging and inconvenience to citizens.
