Sunni Dam workers protest against SJVN

The Sunni Dam Hydro Electric Project Workers’ Union, affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), staged a protest against SJVN management, accusing it of suppressing workers’ rights.

Union president Om Prakash alleged that workers were being paid below minimum wages, made to perform skilled tasks while being compensated as unskilled labourers, denied leave salaries and forced to work without ID cards. He further claimed that EPF contributions were not being deposited and basic amenities like drinking water and accommodation were lacking. Following the protest, union representatives met with SJVN management. The company assured workers that several demands would be met. These included providing 30 days of leave salary annually, a dust allowance of Rs 1,000 per month, and wages based on skill levels. The management also promised to complete the ESI registration process within three days.

With these assurances, the union decided to call off the protest. However, they warned that if the promises are not fulfilled, they will stage another protest on May 1.
