Muslim Population: Religious conversion is a highly controversial and sensitive topic in India, but interestingly, countries in Europe and the Americas have the largest number of population that have converted to another faith from their birth religion, or turned into atheists who do not believe in any religion.
According to a study by the Pew Research Center, Christians and Buddhists are at the forefront of leaving their birth religion and express interest in choosing another faith, while Hindus and Muslims rarely leave their respective religions.
Muslim population drops by 25% in this country
As per the Pew Research report, while Hinduism and Islam have the highest retention rate among world religions, this trend is not witnessed in the United States, where approximately 23 percent of Muslims have left their religion of birth. Around 10 percent have converted to some other religion, mostly Christianity, while 13 percent identify as atheists, the reported showed.
Notably, more people have left Islam in Turkey– a Muslim-majority nation– than in India, According to the survey, around 4 percent people born into Islam in Turkey no longer identify as Muslims, while the numbers is just one percent in India. In Singapore, about 3 percent have left Islam, while the US has the highest number is witnessed in the US (23 percent).
Hinduism on decline in the US
Akin to Muslims, a major chunk of Hindus in the United States have also left their birth religion. As per the survey, about 18 percent Americans who were born into Hinduism, do not identify as Hindus anymore, with a majority of them converting to other faiths, especially Christianity, while a good portion have turned atheists.
Sri Lanka has the second-highest number of Hindu converts, with 11 percent leaving Hinduism and joining other faiths, majorly Christianity.
Islam to become world’s largest religion
Meanwhile, according to another study by the Pew Research Center, Islam is poised to replace Christianity as the world’s largest largest and the global Muslim population will surge by a whopping 70 percent in the next 35 years, breaching the 3 billion mark by the year 2060
According to the Pew Research study on world’s fastest growing religions, Christianity is currently the most followed religion on earth, accounting for 31 percent of the world’s 7.3 billion population, followed by Islam at second place, and Hinduism in the third spot. However, this dynamic will drastically change over the next three-and-a-half decades as Muslim population is expected to witness a significant rise, making Islam the dominant faith globally, the report predicts.
