Tamil Nadu Cabinet Reshuffle In The Cards? Legal Heat To Force A Shake-Up
A reshuffle in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet is reportedly on the horizon, with growing political tension surrounding two high-profile ministers—K Ponmudy and V Senthil Balaji—fuelling speculation. These developments come amid broader concerns about ongoing controversies within DMK government.
Row Involving Ponmudy, Senthil Balaji
Forest Minister K Ponmudy has come under fire for controversial remarks made during a recent event organised by the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam in Chennai. His comments on Saivism, Vaishnavism, and prostitutes sparked outrage, ultimately resulting in his removal from the post of DMK deputy general secretary. Despite this disciplinary action, opposition parties have intensified their demand for his removal from the state Cabinet altogether.
Meanwhile, Minister V Senthil Balaji, currently out on bail in a high-profile money laundering case connected to the ‘cash-for-jobs’ scam, is facing increased legal scrutiny. The Supreme Court has issued a clear directive, urging him to step down from his ministerial role or risk having his bail revoked. In response, reports suggest that Senthil Balaji may soon resign from the Cabinet.
Reshuffle Likely?
Alongside the Supreme Court's criticism of Senthil Balaji and mounting pressure on Ponmudy, other ministers are reportedly under the scanner as well, prompting talks of an imminent reshuffle.
Reports indicate that portfolios held by Ponmudy and Senthil Balaji could be reassigned to senior ministers such as Chakrapani or Saminathan, as per a report on DT Next. Additionally, there is speculation that Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR) may take over the Electricity Department, reported India Today.
An official announcement regarding the Cabinet changes is expected in the coming days.
