The plot of the film centres around Sonic the Hedgehog, a young anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with the ability to run faster than any other hedgehog. His carefree life takes a dramatic turn when he learns about Dr. Robotnik, also known as "Eggman," a mad scientist who seeks to take control of the world. In order to save the world from Robotnik's evil plans, Sonic decides to confront him. The unfolding of his next moves is revealed in the film.

The film features Jim Carrey in a dual role as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a mad scientist, and Professor Gerald Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Ivo's assistant, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, and Shemar Moore as Randall Handel, among others.

The film also features the voices of the actors, including Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Miles Prower, among others.

It is produced by Neal H Moritz, Takeshi Ito, Toru Nakahara, Toby Ascher, and Hitoshi Okuno under the banner of Paramount Pictures, Marza Animation Planet, Blur Studio, Hedgehog Films, Original Film, and Sega Sammy Group.
