Did You Know Raveena Tandon & Karisma Kapoor Were NOT On Talking Terms During Andaz Apna Apna Shoot?

As Andaz Apna Apna returns to theatres on Friday (April 25), nearly three decades after its original release, it's the perfect time to revisit some fun and lesser-known facts about the film that went from being a box-office disappointment to a cult classic. While audiences still laugh at the hilarious on-screen chemistry, the behind-the-scenes story was anything but harmonious, especially between leading ladies Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor, who, it turns out, were not even on talking terms during the shoot.

In a recent interview with India Today, Aamir Khan, who played the bumbling Amar Manohar in the film, offered some insights into the chaos that unfolded behind the camera. "We had a lovely time. Also, have to say it was also a tough time because I was the only actor who used to come on time. Karisma aati thi toh Raveena chali jati thi. Bahot mushkil se woh film bani thi," he recalled.

Aamir further admitted, "Don't know if I should say this. Raveena and Karisma ka anban chal raha tha. Main sochta tha ki ye film kaise khatam hogi. Ek saath log shoot nahi kar paa rahe the. But I really believed in that film. It was so wacky and mad. We were at our peak, Salman and I, at the time. But the film didn't even run for a week. I was flummoxed, because I thought it was a great film."

Interestingly, Karisma had also acknowledged this tension in a past interview. Opening up about the dynamics, she had said, "In Andaz Apna Apna, there was a time when none of the actors were talking to each other. This cult film was made with all of us not even speaking to each other. It's quite funny."

Raveena once shared a quirky anecdote on a reality show, revealing that the discord between her and Karisma was so intense that they avoided all interaction, even during shared scenes. She recounted the shoot of the film's climax, where both actresses were tied to a pole. After the scene was done, the director didn't untie them immediately and told them they'd only be released once they started talking to each other.

When Raveena accused Karisma and Salman of ganging up against her

Reportedly, Raveena had even claimed that Salman and Karisma 'ganged up' against her while they were shooting for the film.

In an interview with Stardust in the 1990s, Karisma had even reacted to the allegations in an interview. "What does Raveena mean by saying Salman and I gang up against her? Salman and I are both busy stars, and we have better things to do in life than ganging up against Raveena. I’m sure Salman will agree with me on that," she had said.

Despite the off-screen friction, their performances were seamless and well-received. Director Rajkumar Santoshi had reportedly denied the rumours of any serious discord between Salman and Aamir and said that they bonded well during filming and went on to become close friends.

About Andaz Apna Apna

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Andaz Apna Apna (1994) is a comedy of errors that follows two daydreamers, Amar (Aamir) and Prem Bhopali (Salman), who compete to win the love of a wealthy heiress, Raveena.

Full of iconic characters like Crime Master Gogo, Teja, and hilarious one-liners that continue to be quoted to this day, the film was initially a box-office dud. However, over the years, it became one of the most beloved cult comedies in the history of Indian cinema.
