Hyundai Motor Group Opens EV Battery and Electrification Research Center at IIT Delhi

Hyundai Motor Group has taken a significant step towards strengthening its research and development efforts in India by launching the Hyundai Center of Excellence (Hyundai CoE) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. The new center will focus on advancing technologies in electrification and battery systems, aiming to support the growing demand for clean and smart mobility solutions.

As part of its long-term collaboration with top academic institutions, Hyundai Motor Group has identified nine joint research projects in partnership with IITs across India. These projects are aimed at improving various aspects of battery technology, such as battery cell design, management systems, energy density, safety, and long-term durability. The research will also focus on diagnostic tools and explore advanced materials to enhance battery performance.

The official agreement ceremony for Hyundai Motor Group’s new collaboration with IITs was held in New Delhi, with key officials from both sides in attendance. Heuiwon Yang, President and Head of the R&D Division, Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India, and Chang Hwan Kim, Executive Vice President of the Electrification Energy Solutions Tech Unit, represented Hyundai. From IIT, notable attendees included Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, and Deans Manu Santhanam of IIT Madras and Sachin C. Patwardhan of IIT Bombay. This partnership marks a significant step towards advancing future mobility technologies in India.

Hyundai Motor Group is also broadening its Future Technology Research Program, which began in 2021, to include a more diverse range of academic contributions. Unlike typical academic-industrial collaborations, this program allows university professors to propose their own research topics, which are then evaluated and selected by the Group. Initially focused on South Korea, the program has now been extended to include professors from IITs in India, marking a significant step in globalizing the Group’s academic partnerships. The Hyundai CoE at IIT Delhi is just the beginning, with plans to expand the network across India, connecting top researchers and institutions nationwide.
