Owaisi's AIMIM Wins Hyderabad Local Body MLC Polls

Mirza Riyaz Ul Hassan Effendi of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) emerged victorious in the election for the Hyderabad Local Authorities' seat in Telangana Legislative Council, defeating BJP candidate N Goutham Rao. The election, held on April 23, saw a direct contest between the AIMIM and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the ruling Congress and the main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) opted to stay out of the race.

According to official figures, 88 votes were cast in the poll with Effendi securing a commanding 63 votes against Rao’s 25, as per a report on PTI. A total of 112 individuals were eligible to vote, including 81 corporators from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and 31 ex-officio members such as MLAs, MPs, and sitting MLCs.

The campaign period saw heightened political tensions, with the BJP accusing both the Congress and BRS of indirectly supporting AIMIM by not fielding candidates. The BJP further criticised the two parties for enabling what it called a "communal" party to win unchallenged.
