Animesh sets 200m record, Chithravel equals own feat
Triple jumper Praveen Chithravel and sprinter Animesh Kujur scorched their respective fields, as they registered National Records on the last day of National Federation Senior Athletics Championship.
Chithravel executed his plan to perfection to equal his own national record of 17.37m, while Odisha sprinter Kujur erased his own 200m national record in Kochi on Thursday.
Chithravel’s third and final attempt of 17.37m was enough for him to win gold and also qualify for the World Athletics Championships as the automatic qualification mark stands at 17.22m. “My plan was to record a jump of 17.20m plus today,” the triple jumper said. Chithravel registered 16.99m and 16.87m in his first two attempts.
The jumping pit also saw Uttar Pradesh’s international jumper Shaili Singh erasing long-standing meet record to win the gold medal. Shaili recorded a jump of 6.64m which was better than the previous record of 6.59m set by her mentor Anju Bobby George in 2002.
The men’s 200m final went on expected lines as firm favourite Kujur had set the pulses racing after his good run in the morning heats. He clocked 20.40 seconds to win gold to better the previous record of 20.52 seconds set by Amlan Borgohain in 2022. “It felt good during the morning heat. It was a big boost to my confidence and eventually resulted in a record breaking performance in the medal round,” Kujur said.
Earlier in the morning session, Maharashtra’s international runner Sanjivani Jadhav won the gold medal in the women’s 5,000m and also punched her ticket for the Asian Championships.
