Netflix’s Latest update: Dialogue-only subtitles now available on Netflix
According to 50% of Americans, they typically view video with subtitles. We observe this behavior on Netflix as well; in the US, almost half of all viewing hours are spent with subtitles or captions enabled, so Netflix is improving the experience for subscribers.
Netflix is launching a new option: original language subtitles that just display the spoken conversation, just in time for all the twists, inner monologues, and intense eye contact in the final season of YOU. Up until now, you would activate Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC) to get subtitles in the original language. This feature includes speaker names, aural cues like [phone buzzing] or [dramatic music swells], and speech.
Beginning today with YOU Season 5, new Netflix titles will be the first to provide this new subtitle choice.
There are now two English subtitle options available when you access the language picker while watching the new season: English (CC), which displays both dialogue and audio cues such [door slams], and English, which simply displays the spoken dialogue. Not only that, but going ahead, these subtitles will be accessible on all new Netflix originals in all of our available languages in addition to SDH/CC.
You may now choose from more subtitle options whether you’re attempting to keep up with Joe’s emotional spiral, sneaking in an episode when someone is sleeping, or watching in a noisy area. Remember that you may alter the font and size of your subtitles to make them uniquely yours.
Decide what suits you the most.
