Glut in Tarn Taran mandi

Lifting of the wheat stock that has arrived in the local grain market is going on at a snail’s pace. It has become a problem as because of the wheat glut, there is no space to unload the new arrival.

The conditions are such that it has become difficult to move around on foot in the mandis and the movement of trolleys loaded with stocks of wheat is creating a jam-like situation.

Manjit Singh Baggu, a farmer leader, said that the condition in other mandis is even worse. In a press release issued here on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Rahul said that till today, a total stock of 4,34,235 MT wheat had arrived in the district mandis of which 4,06,907 MT had been procured . The DC said that payment worth Rs 648 crore has been credited into the accounts of farmers as payment on the procured crop is necessary for the administration. The DC refrained from commenting on the lifting of procured stock from the mandis. The commission agents (arhtiyas) said that the administration always failed to keep the interests of farmers, commission agents, mandi labour and others in mind.
