Dadu Majra dumping site to get green look, Rs 32L plan approved

The Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) of the Municipal Corporation has approved a proposal to plant trees and shrubs at the cost of Rs 32.90 lakh at the dumping ground in Dadu Majra.

The amount to be spent on the beautification of the dumping site was brought before the committee in its meeting held on March 24. In the minutes of the meeting, the Superintending Engineer (horticulture and electrical) stated that efforts were made for plantation at the site three to four times in the past. He pointed out that nearby villagers used to release their cattle during night hours, which damaged the plants. So, there was a need to install tree guards as well.

Saurabh Joshi, a member of the committee, suggested that the concept of mini forest may also be taken into consideration near the garbage processing plant or in neighbourhood parks.

Appreciating the suggestion, Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla said the main idea was to clean the environment by reduce the pollution at the dumping site.

Joshi said an NGO was ready to provide plants free of cost. He suggested that the concept of decorative plants as proposed in the agenda should not be followed at the dumping ground. Instead, plants that release oxygen and were associated with the religious sentiments of people should be planted. He suggested that the work of providing and planting trees and shrubs could be carried out on the Public-Private Partnership model.

Spread across 45 acres, the dumping site has been a major challenge for the MC for a long time. People living in its vicinity at Dadu Majra, Sector 38 (West), Sector 25, Dhanas Colony and other areas have been the worst hit due to the foul smell and pollution caused by the dump.
