Cabinet Committee on Security meeting under way; India mulls response to Pahalgam attack

A day after four LeT terrorists killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has convened a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security at his residence.

A major and calibrated response to the attack is expected to be formalised at the meeting. The response could be both military and diplomatic. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has already said publicly that India will give a befitting response to the Pahalgam attack in the near future.

Post the Pulwama attack in 2019, India had recalled its ambassador from Pakistan. Pakistan had also recalled its high commissioner.

India currently has a high commission in Islamabad with diplomatic relations already curtailed post the Pulwama attack in which Jaish-e-Muhammad had claimed responsibility for killing over 40 Indian paramilitary personnel. India has a deputy high commissioner in Islamabad.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is attending the CCS meeting after returning from Srinagar.

The CCS consists of the PM, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman (who is on her way back home after cutting short the US and Peru visit) and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

NSA Ajit Doval, service chiefs and Chief of Defence Staff are also learnt to be attending the meeting of the apex cabinet committee responsible for national security.
