Born on June 10, 1938, in Petamitta, a remote village in Andhra Pradesh, Ramachandra Naidu Galla grew up in a modest family and developed an early fascination with radios and electrical circuits. Later, Ramachandra went to Michigan State University in the United States, where he earned his master’s degree. He became the first person from his village to pursue a master’s degree in America, as reported by News18 Hindi.

In the U.S., Galla had a well-paying job and a simple yet comfortable life. However, he had a different dream. He envisioned empowering the rural regions of India and always aspired to return and make a difference in his homeland.

It was in the year 1985 that Amara Raja made its humble beginning. Dr Ramachandra N Galla returned from the USA with the expressed purpose of making a difference by ushering development in his homeland at Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. He firmly believed that apart from business objectives, entrepreneurs had an underlying responsibility towards empowering people and advancing social goals. The first manufacturing facility and office were established in a remote village Karakambadi, 12 kms from the holy town of Tirupati. Accprding to the News18Hindi report, Galla introduced Sealed Maintenance-Free (SMF) batteries, which were safer, cleaner, and more durable compared to traditional batteries. In the year 2000, Galla partnered with the American company Johnson Controls to launch a new battery brand called Amaron.

Then in 2008, Amara Raja secured exclusive deals with major automakers like Tata Motors and Hyundai. Today, the company supplies batteries to Tata, Hyundai, Ford, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra, and customers in over 50 countries around the world.

An electrical engineer by profession, he acquired a Master’s degree in System Sciences from Michigan State University, USA in 1968. After working briefly for US Steel Corporation in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, he later joined Sargent & Lundy in 1971.
