History Of World Book Day:
The year 1995 was the establishment of World Book Day when the General Conference of UNESCO officially declared April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day. The date was chosen to honour the two great literary figures, William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, both of whom died in the year 1616. The first World Book Day was celebrated in 1996. While it started out small, it has been gaining much importance ever since. In 2000, the UK and Ireland began to celebrate the day on the first Thursday of March to avoid coincidence with school holidays.
Two years later, World Book Day Ltd was set up to coordinate celebrations in these two countries, the UK and Ireland.
Several developments followed, including the establishment of World Book Night in 2011 to encourage reading by giving out free copies of books by volunteers. 2020, the year of COVID-19, saw many of the day's activities and events going online to obey safety protocols.
Significance Of This Day:
World Book Day inspires the love of reading in everybody, regardless of age. Schools organise book activities; libraries invite authors; communities celebrate their love for literary works. All countries celebrate in their culturally distinct ways, from the multilingual book fairs of India to Spain's tradition of exchanging books and roses. From book festivals honouring local authors in Africa to author signings and literary exhibitions celebrated in Japan and China, the uniqueness of each nation expresses itself through varied celebrations.
Theme Of 2025:
The theme for World Book Day 2025 is 'Read Your Way'. This theme encourages readers to choose books based on their preferences and promotes reading for pleasure. This theme underlines the importance of giving children and young readers the power to decide for themselves and establish a culture of ongoing reading.
Statistics show that globally, people have developed healthy engagement with literature. World Book Day continues to ignite a global conversation on the power of books and why reading should be a habit for everyone, whether through book swaps, literary quizzes, author meet-and-greets, or online reading challenges.
