Chhattisgarh: Coal Transport Halted As Displaced Villagers Protest SECL Operations In Korba

Tensions have escalated in the Korba district as land-displaced villagers from SECL's Kusmunda, Gevra, and Deepka mines have taken to the streets under the banners of the Chhattisgarh Kisan Sabha and Bhu-Visthapit Rozgar Sangh, demanding long-overdue justice and rehabilitation. The ongoing protest at Kusmunda mine has brought coal transportation to a complete halt since 6:00 am.

The agitating villagers are demanding, immediate resolution of pending employment cases for displaced families, return of Khamaria land allegedly acquired without due settlement, employment in outsourcing works for those displaced by mining operations, halt in arbitrary compensation processes, especially under new or altered names and provision of basic facilities in resettlement colonies and displaced villages.

The protesters allege that although SECL (South Eastern Coalfields Limited) acquired vast tracts of land from villagers over the years for coal mining operations, a large number of displaced individuals are yet to receive employment, despite earlier assurances. Though some have been employed during previous rounds of agitation, many others remain deprived, fueling the ongoing unrest.

On receiving information about the protests, SECL officials, police, and security forces reached the site and are currently engaged in dialogue with the demonstrators in an effort to defuse the situation.

The agitation underscores the long-standing grievances of mining-affected communities in the Korba region—often caught between promises of development and the harsh reality of displacement without sustainable livelihood. Activists point out that outsourcing and privatization of coal-related works have further reduced job opportunities for the displaced.

As negotiations continue, the shutdown of coal transportation could significantly impact operations at SECL, one of India’s largest coal producers, potentially disrupting supply chains if the protest is prolonged.

Locals say they will not back down until their demands are met and justice is ensured for every family affected by SECL’s land acquisitions.
