Woman Sends Poisoned Easter Eggs To Ex's Family, 7-Year-Old Dies After Eating It
A 7-year-old boy died, and two others were critically ill after a woman allegedly poisoned Easter chocolates and sent it to the home of her ex-boyfriend’s new partner out of jealousy in Brazil.
The 35-year-old accused, identified as Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, reportedly disguised herself to purchase chocolate Easter eggs, which she then laced with poison before sending them as a gift to her ex-boyfriend’s new partner, 32-year-old Mirian Lira.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Barbosa left a note with the gift that read, “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter." After Lira received the gift last Wednesday, she shared the eggs with her children, 7-year-old Luis Silva and 13-year-old Evelyn Fernanda.
After consuming the chocolates, her son, Luis Silva, immediately fell ill and later died in a nearby hospital the following day, however, Evelyn and Lira are still in critical condition at the same hospital, as per the Standard.
The leftover chocolates are being tested further, and the cause of Luis' death is yet to be confirmed.
Accused Nabbed In Bus
Reports also indicate that Barbosa had previously attempted to harm Lira by allegedly trying to serve her tainted sweets during a staff chocolate-tasting event at the supermarket where she worked, as per Imperatriz Online.
Following the incident, Barbosa was arrested by Maranhão Civil Police last Thursday while traveling by bus to her hometown of Santa Inês. Authorities traced her involvement in the poisoning through receipts linked to the purchase of the chocolate eggs. According to the Daily Mail, Barbosa’s ex-boyfriend also told police she might have been responsible.
While Barbosa admitted to buying the chocolates, she denied adding any poison to them. During the investigation, police discovered several suspicious items in her possession, including two wigs, scissors, greeting cards, a saw knife, and unidentified substances.
Brazilian security official Maurício Martins stated to The Standard that the motive behind the alleged poisoning appeared to be "revenge and jealousy."
“There are several indications that clearly point to this woman being the perpetrator of the crime. The police will continue working to strengthen this evidence and present her to the Judiciary to answer for this barbaric crime,” Martins wrote.
