Mumbai: A Mumbai commuter has raised concerns about water leakage from the newly constructed coastal road, raising questions about the quality and sustainability of the ambitious infrastructure project.
The Rs 12,721 crore project was inaugurated with much fanfare by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his two deputies, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.

The Reddit post described persistent leakage from the coastal road structure, which has allegedly been seeping water onto vehicles.
Red patches in coastal roadThe Mumbai Coastal Road is a big project meant to reduce traffic and provide a smooth drive along the sea. But now, people are worried that it may not have been built properly. Many fear that if there are leaks now, things could get worse during the monsoon season.
In an X post, the user stated, "Coastal Road Tunnel leaks Adding some charm to an otherwise bland tunnel."
This is a PSA part 2

So far, the city authorities have not given any official reply on the post. But many people are talking about it online and asking for a quick solution. Some are worried that if the road has leaks already, it could become unsafe later. The leak has raised questions about how the road was built and whether enough care was taken to prevent such problems. As more people start using the road every day, citizens are hoping that the authorities will look into the issue and fix it soon.
Citizens Reactions:
One user, while tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticised the quality of construction and said, “Firse request karta hu aap Britishers, Japanese ya Chinese companies se bridges banwao, Britishers ke 150 saal purane bridges aaj bhi top condition me hai, aap, aapki sarkar aur is desh ke log caste caste khelne me top class hai to wahi kare..”
On the other hand, another user shared their personal experience and worries after noticing rust marks inside the tunnel walls. “Today, I was in a Taxi going for the MI match and this is what I saw. The spots are red rust marks. I think this is from sea water ingress rusting the rebar in the tunnel walls. When rebar rusts, it expands. Concrete is great in compression but not in tension (the kind of force that is caused by rebar expanding). The tunnel is dangerous.”
He also added a serious warning: “Once again, this is a PSA. Be safe, be alert when you’re in the tunnel. There’s literal tons of pressure of seawater above you in the tunnel. The government will only be held accountable when the tunnel fails onto Mercedes and BMW cars.”
About the Coastal Road:
The twin tunnels of the Coastal Road pass under Girgaon Chowpatty, the Arabian Sea, the Hanging Gardens, and Malabar Hill. The north-bound tunnel is 2,072 metres long, while the south-bound one is slightly longer at 2,082 metres because of a curve. After Malabar Hill, the road comes above ground and continues northward.
