3-yr-old boy crushed under speeding XUV in Jalandhar

Festivities in a family turned into gloom when a three-year-old boy was crushed under the wheels of an uncontrollable XUV here today.

The mishap happened close to the family’s residence near the Kishanpura chowk.

The victim, Tripur, is the child of Barinder Lucky, owner of the Jalandhar’s Lucky Dhaba here.

The Rama Mandi police registered an FIR against the car owner, Himanshu, under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106-A (causing death by negligence), Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. The driver has been arrested by the police.

This morning, minutes after residents of the locality witnessed the speeding XUV crushing a dog under its wheels, Tripur Hans was also crushed under the vehicle. The vehicle driver, who kept driving after the gruesome accident, did not stop despite protestations by witnesses and sped from the scene.

The mood at Tripur’s house this morning was gleeful as the family was getting ready to take him to a temple for “mundan" (hair shaving) ceremony. But the joy was soon turned into tragedy by the screeching tyres of the SUV.

Family’s relative Somnath said, “The boy was with me when the vehicle came speeding from the other side. The child was standing near me and I gestured the vehicle to stop, but the driver sped and crushed the child under the XUV’s wheels. The vehicle turned towards Domoriah Bridge. I chased it till Ravidass School, but could not stop it. The man should immediately be arrested and punished."

A CCTV footage showed a white XUV speeding away on an empty road.

ASI Balkaran Singh, police station Rama Mandi, reached the spot and the child’s body was taken to the Civil Hospital Jalandhar for post-mortem.

Balkaran Singh, said, “The car owner has been rounded up and arrest proceedings are on. The number is registered in the name of the owner’s mother. It was traced after investigating the CCTV footage."
