Garbage mess in Gurugram: Sector 46 residents raise concerns over unauthorised dumping of waste
An open space behind the Huda market in Sector 46 in Gurugram city has turned into an eyesore with garbage piling up, even along the roads, posing a serious health hazard to locals.
They allege that the waste management system under the Municipal Corporation had gone for a toss, with door-to-door collection workers of the private agency dumping it with impunity.
Pawan Kumar, a local businessman, said the garbage could be seen lying around at public places — be it in parking lots of the market, on the roadsides or green belts encroached by vendors.
“This is purely because the MCG has failed to properly do its job and keep a check on the private agencies hired for door-to-door collection and transportation of garbage to Bandhwari from the secondary collection points,” he said.
Ashok Kumar, an active member of the Residents Welfare Association of Jal Vihar Colony, said the private agencies must be held accountable for the garbage mess created in the city.
The residents alleged that most of the door-to-door garbage collection agents were working independently. Instead of taking the garbage to secondary collection points, they were throwing it at undesignated places. Some locals, mostly living as tenants, were also throwing garbage wherever they saw some vacant space. The condition was worse in and around the Huda market, with heaps of garbage lying at many places.
Raju Chauhan, another local, revealed that the door-to-door garbage collection workers did not come daily. Sometimes, they came two or three days in a week. Under such circumstances, nobody could keep garbage inside their homes for days, so it would definitely end up on the roadsides or in the vacant plots, if not picked up regularly, he said.
Aman Nimwal, Senior Sanitation Inspector of the area, said a fire incident at Bandhwari landfill site last week had delayed the lifting of garbage at many places in the city.
“Now, the situation is normal. I will ensure that garbage is transported regularly from this point to the Bandhwari landfill site. Additionally, I will deploy some trolleys at this point so that the garbage collection agents and the local people throw in the trolleys and do not litter it on the vacant plot and roadsides,” he said.
