Indian Railways: In terms of the largest railway networks in the world, Indian Railways ranks fourth. While in providing facilities to passengers, Indian Railways plays a leading role. Various rules have been established for passengers during their journey. Compliance with these railway rules is mandatory for every passenger. You must have traveled by train at some point in your life, but do you know what items you are not allowed to carry on the train according to railway rules? If you are unaware of these rules, we will help you out.
Major railway rules regarding luggage, items such as stoves, gas cylinders, flammable chemicals, fireworks, acids, and foul-smelling substances like leather or wet hide, grease, cigarettes, and explosives should not be carried in trains. There is also a rule regarding fruits, which states that certain fruits are completely prohibited from carrying in the trains.
Not only that, there is also a provision for punishment for passengers who violate these rules. If a passenger takes alcohol on the train, they can get into serious trouble. According to railway rules, no passenger can travel on the train while consuming alcohol or under the influence of drugs. The Railway Act of 1989 has established strict laws under Section 165 for this. The rule states that if any person or passenger is seen consuming intoxicating substances, in a state of intoxication, creating disturbances, or attempting to harass other passengers in the train or railway premises, their ticket can be canceled with immediate effect. Moreover, if the passenger is a railway pass holder, their pass can also be canceled. According to the rule, if found guilty, the person can face up to 6 months in jail and a fine of 500 rupees.
If a passenger wishes to take along a pet, there are separate rules, and different rules apply for those with an AC first-class ticket. Only certain animals like horses or goats are permitted to be carried. According to the rules, carrying gas cylinders on the train is prohibited; however, in the case of a medical emergency, a cylinder can be brought along following certain guidelines. It is noteworthy that the railway itself provides various facilities for oxygen cylinders.
According to railway regulations, it is prohibited to carry dangerous liquids such as hydrochloric acid, toilet cleaning acid, all types of dry grass, leaves or waste paper, oil, grease, etc.
All fruits except dried coconut can be taken on the passenger train. The outer part of the dried coconut (which has fibrous materials like grass) is considered flammable. This part increases the risk of fire. Therefore, it is banned to carry this fruit on the train.
One rule of Indian Railways states that, “If any passenger is caught traveling with prohibited items on the train, the railway is free to take action against them. In such a case, the passenger may face a fine of 1,000 rupees, three years of imprisonment, or both. If any damage to railway property occurs due to prohibited items, the guilty passenger will also have to bear the cost of that damage.”
