Victim of ‘Love Jihad’? No, woman with bruised eye in viral pic is a Bangladeshi Muslim who met with an accident
A photo collage featuring an image of a woman and a man, and the same woman with her right eye bruised is viral on social media. Right-wing users claim that it was a case of a Hindu woman who married a Muslim man and was physically assaulted by him.
Prominent social media influencer Rishi Bagree, who amplifies misinformation and propaganda on a regular basis, tweeted the collage and sarcastically said, “She married Abbas to smash the Brahmin Patriarchy. Abbas started a separate war…” (Archive)

Verified user @aruhirathod200 also tweeted the two images and called the woman a Bangladeshi ‘Honda Sherni‘, a sarcastic jibe at purported victims of ‘Love Jihad’ and a possible distortion of ‘Hindu Sherni’. This user’s claim suggests that the victim is a Bangladeshi Hindu woman. (Archive)
Verified Right-wing user @wokeflix_ also tweeted the same pictures and amplified claims of ‘Love Jihad’. The tweet has garnered over 1,50,000 views. (Archive)
Several other X users also amplified the viral claim. (Archives- 1, 2, 3, 4)

Fact Check
Alt News was able to identify the woman as Adrita Azad Reety. We found her Facebook page where she had released a statement in reference to the viral claims about her.
She wrote, “By birth, I am a Muslim. My father’s name is Md. Abul Kalam Azad and my mother’s name is Salma Sultana, which is clearly stated on my NID card. No one has attacked me; I had an accident on the 17th. Hindutva supporters are spreading misinformation using my injury photos. Please stop spreading false information. I am physically very unwell. My husband and I can no longer bear this mental pressure.”

The NID card, or the National Identity Card, is an identity card issued to every Bangladeshi citizen upon turning 18 years of age by the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC). This means that Reety is a Bangladeshi citizen.
The Facebook photos uploaded in the post showed instances of her confronting Facebook pages that were putting out such misinformation about her. We saw several instances of her posting screenshots of such misinformation and repeatedly clarifying them on her Facebook timeline. Reety also stated that she had been receiving a lot of hate messages after her pictures had gone viral.

Under one of the posts, she informed a user in the comments that a general diary had been filed at the police station.

We also located the first time the images of her injuries were posted. They were posted by her husband on her Facebook profile on April 18. According to the post, Reety had been in a road accident after a boy who was skating on the road crashed into her. The boy’s helmet hit her right eye directly, and her right eye and the area around it were injured. The husband informed that she was progressively doing better and wished for a speedy recovery for her.

We also got access to Reety’s National ID card and were able to verify that she indeed was a Muslim and that her parents were Muslim too. As it stands, a Muslim Bangladeshi woman’s photo after she had met with an accident was taken out of context and falsely circulated as that of a Hindu woman assaulted by her Muslim husband.
