Karnataka former DGP murder: Was his wife schizophrenic? Here's what you need to know about schizophrenia

Police investigating the murder of former Karnataka DGP Om Prakash has learnt that his wife Pallavi allegedly threw chilli powder on his face before stabbing him to death, reported PTI.
He was found murdered at his Bengaluru residence in HSR layout on Sunday evening. Police have detained both his wife and daughter suspecting their involvement in the murder of the ex-police chief.
According to India Today, Kartikesh, son of the deceased former DGP, his mother who is now the prime accused in the case, had been battling schizophrenia for the past 12 years and was undergoing treatment. As per the family members, Pallavi frequently expressed fear and often remained in a delusional state.
A few months ago, Pallavi approached the HSR Layout police station to lodge a complaint. When the staff there did not oblige, she staged a 'Dharna' (sit-in demonstration) in front of the police station, PTI reported.
What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that affects how people think, feel and behave. People with schizophrenia may experience hallucinations, delusions, disorganised thinking and behaviour.
Causes and treatment options
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than two out of three people with psychosis in the world do not receive specialist mental health care. A range of effective care options for people with schizophrenia exist and at least one in three people with schizophrenia will be able to fully recover. Research has not identified one single cause responsible for triggering schizophrenia. It is thought that an interaction between genes and a range of environmental factors may cause schizophrenia. Psychosocial factors may also affect the onset and course of the mental health disorder.
Regarding treatment procedures for the disorder, Mayo Clinic says lifelong treatment with medicines and psychosocial therapy can help manage schizophrenia, though there is no cure for it.
