At least three persons were killed and several homes, vehicles and sections of the Jammu Srinagar national highway turned into a pile of rubble due to the flash floods.
“Reports coming from Ramban suggest that the situation is really bad in some areas, especially around the highway (Jammu-Srinagar highway),” Abdullah told reporters in Srinagar.
He assured that efforts are being made on war footing to restore the highway as soon as possible.
“Alongside the highway restoration, our focus is also on rehabilitating residential areas affected by the landslides,” he said.
The Chief Minister said that relief is being arranged the J&K government is trying to reach out to the central government on the issue.
“We are also looking to tap the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and other available resources to compensate the affected people,” Abdullah said.
Abdullah urged people to remain calm and not indulge in hoarding or black marketing due to the closure of Jammu-Srinagar highway.
“There is no shortage of essentials. I appeal to the public—please don’t hoard. Anyone found black marketing or hiking prices unnecessarily will face strict action,” he warned. “Instructions have been issued officials to register FIRs and, if needed, make arrests.”
Abdullah confirmed that the Jammu-Srinagar highway remains closed for now, but the Mughal Road is open.
“If necessary, goods can be brought in through the Mughal Road. We are hopeful that the highway will be restored for at least one-way traffic within a day or two,” he said.
The National Conference leader also announced that he would be visiting Ramban personally to assess the situation and hold a meeting with officials. (Agencies)
