Soundarya’s beauty and acting still attract the audience, she was called the ‘lady superstar’ in South India. One amazing thing about Soundarya is that she made a name for herself in the film industry with just one film in Bollywood, but when she was at the peak of her career, it had a tragic ending. Soundarya’s real name is Soumya Satyanarayana. The actress made her debut in 1992 in the Kannada film ‘Ba Nanna Preetisu’. Soundarya then made her first appearance in Tollywood with the film ‘Manavaraali Pelli’ (1993).

In 1993, Soundarya made a landmark achievement in the Tamil film ‘Ponnumaani’, which is still appreciated today. Her stardom grew rapidly after starring in the Telugu film ‘Hello Brother’. During this time, Soundarya was a big name in the entertainment fraternity; her ability to portray the emotions of all the characters effortlessly made her a favourite.

Soundarya took no time to dominate South cinema and became the preferred actress in the film business. Makers paired her with top stars like Nagarjuna, Rajinikanth, and Chiranjeevi. Her onscreen pairing with actor Venkatesh became more popular. Soundarya’s stardom echoed even in Bollywood, but she did just one film in Bollywood. The 1999 film ‘Sooryavansham, with Amitabh Bachchan, was a blockbuster. The film got her pan-India recognition, and her screen presence in the film mesmerised the audience. Soundarya became a favourite of the Hindi audience with just one film.

For the unversed, Soundarya had worked in more than 100 films in a career spanning 12 years. Soundarya dominated the Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam industry. Films like ‘Ammoru’ and ‘Pavitra Bandhan’ became fans’ favourites. Soundarya, for her impressive film career she was awarded with dozens of awards, from prestigious Filmfare Awards and Nandi Awards.

Soon after conquering the film industry, Soundarya stepped into politics. Along with films, she worked for the betterment of society. In 2004, Soundary affiliated herself with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Soundarya took part in the election campaigns in Andhra Pradesh. Based on her good image, she attracted voters in politics as well. Due to her special style of mingling with the public, she became popular in politics as well.

Soundarya’s life came to a tragic end on 17 April 2004 when she died in a plane crash. The plane she was travelling in crashed shortly after taking off from Jakkur airstrip near Bangalore. Soundarya was going to take part in the BJP’s election campaign in Andhra Pradesh. All the people on board the plane died. Along with Soundarya, her brother was dead. Soundarya was just 31 at that time. Rumours were also there that Soundarya was pregnant at the time of the incident, while being married to Raghunath, a software engineer, in 2003.
