CM flags off 1,111 GPS-enabled water tankers

In a major push for transparent and accountable water supply in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off 1,111 GPS-enabled water tankers from Burari’s DDA Ground here on Sunday. The move is aimed at dismantling the tanker mafia and enabling real-time tracking of water distribution through technology.

Terming it a historic moment, CM Gupta said: “This is not just the launch of a tanker service, but the beginning of a new, transparent and tech-enabled system of water distribution.”

She emphasised that every tanker’s movement, delivery time and quantity of water supplied will now be tracked 24×7 from a central control room in Jhandewalan. Citizens can access this data through the Delhi Jal Board mobile app, making water delivery visible and verifiable.

The event was attended by Cabinet Minister Parvesh Verma, MPs Manoj Tiwari and Bansuri Swaraj and BJP leaders Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Kapil Mishra among others.

Highlighting the failure of the previous government, Gupta said, “Even in the Capital of the country, several areas lacked piped water. The supply was disorganised and dominated by tanker mafias. We are committed to changing the system with a new vision, technology and honesty.”

She announced that Rs 9,000 crore has been allocated in the ‘Viksit Delhi Budget’ for clean water and sanitation. This includes Rs 150 crore for intelligent metering, Rs 200 crore to intercept Najafgarh drain, Rs 100 crore for new bore wells and rainwater harvesting and Rs 50 crore to rejuvenate water bodies in the city. Funds have also been earmarked to convert open canals from Haryana into pipelines and to extend piped water networks in underserved areas.

The Chief Minister also pointed to a dramatic increase in operational resources — from just two super sucker machines in the past to 50 today — to address waterlogging and sewer issues. She said detailed planning was underway to prepare for water shortage in summer and flooding during monsoons.

Appealing for public participation, Gupta urged citizens to track tankers, report discrepancies and help conserve water. “Every citizen should become part of this mission. Save water, don’t hesitate to report issues and remember — every drop counts,” she said.

Calling the initiative a milestone for “Digital Delhi,” Gupta reaffirmed her government’s commitment to providing clean and uninterrupted water to every household, with the public now playing an active role in ensuring accountability.
