Visit grain markets to check weight of gunny bags, Karnal SDMs told

After various farmers’ unions raised concerns regarding alleged irregularities in weighing of wheat at several grain markets, the district administration has increased its vigilance and begun inspecting gunny bags loaded with farmers’ wheat in grain markets. In addition, authorities are checking the unloaded stock in different godowns.

Leaders of the BKU (Mann) and BKU (Sir Chhotu Ram) highlighted issues related to excess wheat being loaded into gunny bags. Responding to the complaints, Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh assigned the inquiry to Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Yash Jaluka, following which all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) of the district were directed to inspect the grain markets.

“Following the issues raised by the farmers’ unions, the DC has assigned the inquiry to me. All SDMs have been instructed to inspect both grain markets and godowns. I have also personally visited a couple of godowns,” said Jaluka, adding that irregularities at any level would not be tolerated.

A delegation of BKU (Mann), led by its president Rattan Mann, and BKU (Sir Chhotu Ram) spokesperson Bahadur Singh Mehla visited various grain markets separately and raised the issue of discrepancies in wheat weighing. Meanwhile, CM Flying teams also visited the grain markets and found irregularities.

Licences of two arhtiyas have also been suspended for the allegedl irregularities. As per the guidelines, each bag should weigh 50.600 kg—comprising 50 kg of wheat and 600 grams for the gunny bag. However, farmers alleged that in some instances, the weight exceeded 51 kg per bag.
