Bihar Man Uses Delhi Jal Board Logo To Dupe Patna Woman Over WhatsApp
A man identified as 'Bittu Kumar' was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Patna, Bihar for allegedly using the logo of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to cheat people. The DJB is a government body responsible for the supply of water in Delhi.
A complaint was filed against unknown people, alleging that they coaxed the victim to install malware on her mobile phone. The fraudsters told her that was told that failing to do so would result in the discontinuation of the supply of water due to non-payment of the dues.
The complainant found out the hard way that the malware was in the form of an APK file, which carried the name and logo of the Delhi Jal Board. Soon after installing the APK file, the malware gave access of the woman's WhatsApp account, financial data, and other mobile applications to the accused.
Subsequently, the WhatsApp account of the victim was used to spread the malware and other malicious links. Moreover, her display picture (DP) on WhatsApp was changed to the DJB logo.
In an operation to nab the accused in Patna, 'Bittu Kumar' was caught while he was exchanging debit cards for cash at a petrol pump. Later, CBI carried out raids at three different locations, which led to the recovery of 11 mobile phones, 14 debit cards of other account holders, cash vending machine and other suspicious material which further added to his involvement in the crime.
Bittu Kumar was finally arrested on April 17 in Patna. He was then produced before the court and the police was granted a four-day transit remand by the court to facilitate his travel to Delhi, where he will be questioned further.
