Berhampur Cyber Police Team Arrests Interstate Cybercriminal in Rs 34.5 Lakh Digital Arrest Scam

Berhampur: In a significant breakthrough, the Berhampur Cyber Police arrested one interstate cybercriminal in connection with the Rs34.5 lakh digital arrest fraud case.
The Berhampur Cyber Crime & Economic Offences Police Station team during investigation ascertained the involvement of two accused persons who were from Gujarat.
They were apprehended by Bhuj City B Division Police Station (Gujurat State) and forwarded to the Court of 2nd Addl.Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Buj-Kutch, Gujurat.
The Berhampur Cyber Police team prayed for remand through the Court of SDJM, Berhampur for remand of involved accused persons.
The case, registered on January 29, 2025, at the CC & EO Police Station, Berhampur, stemmed from a complaint by a victim from Kukudakhandi, who was defrauded by cybercriminals posing as CBI officers. The fraudsters falsely implicated the victim in a money laundering case, placing them under “digital arrest” and coercing them to transfer Rs 34.5 lakh for a priority investigation.
During the investigation, the Berhampur Cyber Police identified two accused: Shishpar alias Subhash and Govindram alias Goverdhanram, 35, also from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. While Subhash was brought to Berhampur after obtaining a transit warrant from the SDJM Court, Govindram remains in custody in Rajasthan, with steps underway to bring him for further questioning.
A dedicated police team, comprising SI R.K. Dash, Hav. P.N. Raju, and Constables A. Panigrahy and K.K. Nayak, facilitated Subhash’s transfer from Bhuj, Gujarat, to Berhampur, where he was produced before the SDJM Court. The investigation also led to the freezing of Rs 4.5 lakh in Bhuj Cooperative Bank and Rs 17.94 lakh in SBI’s Mehgaon branch, with the SDJM Court ordering the release of these funds.
In a related development, a similar digital arrest scam involving Rs 2.38 crore has been reported at Cobab Mahany Police Station, highlighting the growing threat of such cybercrimes.
Meanwhile, Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M urged citizens to remain cautious of unsolicited investment schemes and digital arrest threats on social media and messaging platforms.
“Always verify the authenticity of such offers before investing. Report suspicious activities immediately to the Cyber Helpline 1930 or the nearest police station,” he said.
