Anurag Kashyap Apologises After Daughter Receives Rape & Death Threats Amid Controversy Over His Remark Against Brahmins

Actor and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued an apology amid controversy over his 'derogatory' remark against the Brahmin community. On Friday (April 18), Anurag shared his statement on Instagram and also revealed that his daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, has been receiving death and rape threats. He also appealed to those issuing threats to his family members to stop and leave them alone.

In his statement, Anurag also clarified that he is apologising for only one line he mentioned which has been taken out of context.

For those unversed, Anurag's "Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem?" remark did not go down well with a section of social media users and he has been receiving massive backlash. A complaint was also filed against him in Mumbai for his 'casteist' and 'derogatory' comment.

Anurag wrote, "This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar."

"Kahi hui baat wapis nahin li ja sakti aur na loonga lekin mujhe jo gaali dena hai do. Mere parivaar ne na kuchh kaha hai na kahta hai. Isliye agar mujhse maafi hi chaahiye to ye meri apology hai ((What's been said cannot be taken back, and I won't take it back either. But if you need to hurl abuses, direct them at me. My family has neither said anything nor does it say anything. So if it's an apology you want from me, then this is my apology)," he added.

The filmmaker further wrote, "Brahmin log, auraton ko baksh do, itna sanskar to shastron mein bhi hai, sirf manuwaad mein nahin hai. Aap kaun se Brahmin ho tay kar lo. Baaki meri taraf se maafi (Brahmins, spare the women, even the scriptures teach this much decency, it's not just a part of 'manuvaad'. Decide for yourselves what kind of Brahmins you are. As for me, I offer my apology)."

Anurag, known for his bold and provocative storytelling in films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, and Dev.D, is no stranger to controversy. However, this latest accusation has stirred backlash on social media, with demands for legal action gaining momentum.

What is the controversy?

It all started after Anurag strongly criticised the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for delaying the release of Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa's Phule, a biographical drama directed by Ananth Mahadevan.

The film stars Pratik as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai Phule. It faced backlash from sections of the Brahmin community in Maharashtra over alleged misrepresentation.

Anurag not only questioned the CBFC's decision but also called out the perceived hypocrisy of the protestors. He also raised concerns about how an unreleased film had become accessible to certain groups, prompting such reactions.
