Let's explore the reasons behind why Parashuram killed the Kshatriyas 21 times.
Why Did Parashuram Kill The Kshatriyas 21 Times?
Once, a battle took place between Parashuram and Sahastrarjuna. Sahastrarjuna, the powerful king, was extremely arrogant and had crossed all boundaries of dharma. He insulted religious texts, the Vedas, Puranas, and Brahmins, and destroyed the ashrams of sages. Parashuram, armed with his axe, arrived at Sahastrarjuna's city, Mahishmatipuri. A fierce battle ensued, and Parashuram's immense strength led to Sahastrarjuna's defeat. Parashuram severed Sahastrarjuna's thousands of arms and his torso with his axe.
After the death of Sahastrarjuna, Parashuram went on a pilgrimage to atone for the killing, as per his father's instructions. However, Sahastrarjuna's son, with the help of allied Kshatriyas, attacked the ashram of Sage Jamadagni, who was performing penance, and decapitated him, burning the ashram. When Parashuram's mother, Renuka, cried out for help, Parashuram rushed back to find his mother grieving, with his father's head severed and his body bearing 21 wounds.
Enraged by this, Parashuram vowed to destroy the Haihaya dynasty and all allied Kshatriyas, killing them 21 times to rid the earth of Kshatriyas. According to the Puranas, Parashuram fulfilled his vow by eliminating the Kshatriya clans 21 times.
