Infosys: This company showed the way out to 240 employees, gave them 2 options
Infosys has shown the door to 240 trainee employees who could not pass the internal assessment. These included system engineers and digital specialist engineers. The company has also given two options for them.
New Delhi. Infosys, one of the largest IT companies in India, has once again fired 240 trainees. This decision was taken on 18 April 2025. These trainees (new employees) were unable to pass the company’s internal test. Earlier in February also, more than 300 trainees had to leave for this reason. However, the company has given these youth an opportunity to learn new skills for free, so that they can get a better job in the future.
The trainees fired by Infosys have two options. The first option is to make a career in BPM (Business Process Management), for which free training will be given with UpGrad. After completing the training, they can apply for a job in Infosys BPM Limited. The second option is skill development in IT (Information Technology), for which a free course will be conducted with NIIT. This will help them get other jobs in the IT sector.
The email sent by Infosys said, “If you want to explore new opportunities outside Infosys, we are arranging professional outplacement services for you. Along with this, we want to give you another career option – Infosys sponsored external training for potential roles in the BPM industry. After completing the training, you can apply for the opportunities available in Infosys BPM Limited. At the same time, if you want to further enhance your IT skills, Infosys sponsored IT Fundamentals Training Program is also available, which will take your IT career journey forward.”
What is the condition of the industry
Infosys has had to take this step due to the current market conditions. There are fewer projects going on in the IT sector at the moment, because clients in big markets like the US and Europe are reducing their expenses. Infosys has estimated a revenue growth of just 0-3 percent for this year, which indicates a slowdown in the sector.
Earlier, more than 300 trainees were laid off in February, and 30-45 employees had to leave in March.
On March 26, Infosys laid off 30-45 more trainees from its Mysuru campus for failing to clear internal assessment tests. Sources told Moneycontrol that these trainees were offered the same optional career path as the earlier laid-off employees, which included 12 weeks of training for Infosys BPM. These trainees joined the company after a long wait of about two and a half years, which was caused by the macroeconomic slowdown.
All these trainees were recruited as System Engineers (SE) and Digital Specialist Engineers (DSE), but they were laid off during training before they could work on projects. Many of these trainees completed their engineering studies during Covid, when physical classes were closed. They were recruited through virtual interviews.
Quarterly results make the situation clear
Making profits in the IT sector is now becoming a big challenge. Infosys’ net profit fell 12 percent to Rs 7038 crore in the January-March 2025 quarter, while expenses increased by 6.7 percent to Rs 32,452 crore. Even though the revenue has increased by 8 percent, rising expenses and falling profits have increased the difficulties of the industry.
The company expects a mere 0-3 per cent growth in FY 2025-26. This is an indication that the IT industry is now under heavy pressure and it is becoming difficult to maintain profits. Changes in rules for trainees and making their exams more stringent are also considered to be a result of this sluggishness.
