New Delhi MC holds fire safety seminar

As part of the ongoing Fire Service Week-2025, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Thursday organised a seminar on fire safety in high-rise buildings and conducted a live firefighting demonstration at the NDCC Convention Centre. The event, held under the national theme “Unite to Ignite, a Fire Safe India”, was aimed at enhancing fire safety awareness and preparedness among citizens, particularly in high-density urban environments.

Organised in collaboration with the Delhi Fire Service, the event drew participation from NDMC officials, fire officials, school students and disaster management experts. The live demonstration featured the latest in firefighting technology, including a mini-robot, aerial water tower and turntable ladder. Firefighters, including women personnel, showcased their skills in front of an engaged audience.

Speaking on the occasion, Alka Bijlani, Director (Fire Service), NDMC, stressed that fire safety should not be restricted to a single week but practiced daily. “NDMC Fire Department regularly conducts safety drills in schools, hospitals, old age homes, offices and markets to instil a preventive mindset among citizens,” she said.

Chief of the Delhi Fire Service Atul Garg lauded the dedication of firefighters and described their role as both critical and challenging. “We work in dangerous zones and are trained to respond to every situation. We urge students and citizens to spread awareness and take preventive steps to reduce fire risks,” he said.

NDMC Fire Officer Somvir Singh highlighted that the Fire Service Week was observed every year from April 14 to 20 in memory of the 66 firefighters who lost their lives in the Bombay Dockyard explosion in 1944.

“The week is a reminder of the sacrifices made by fire personnel and also serves as a public awareness campaign for fire safety,” he said.

The seminar included presentations on disaster management, emergency escape strategies and lessons from recent fire incidents. Mukta Girdhar, Senior Consultant, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), interacted with students and spoke on various types of disasters and precautionary measures. Educational brochures were also distributed among schoolchildren.
