Madras High Court Directs Police To File Case Against Minister Ponmudy Over Controversial Remarks
The Madras High Court on Thursday directed Tamil Nadu police to register a case against State Forest Minister K. Ponmudy for his recent controversial remarks that sparked public outrage and led to his removal from a key party position.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh, presiding over the case, issued a stern warning to authorities, making it clear that failure to act would result in the court initiating suo motu contempt proceedings against the police.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh, who gave the warning to the police said, as per PTI, "Now the court has taken cognizance of the matter. Even if you do not have a complaint, register a case and proceed with the investigation." He then adjourned the case for further hearings to April 23.
The Controversy & Minister's Apology
Earlier, Minister drew sharp criticism from several quarters over comments he made during a public event, where he used a controversial analogy referencing a sex worker to make a point about religious identity — specifically Shaivism and Vaishnavism. His remarks, seen by many as offensive and derogatory, have gone viral on social media, further intensifying the backlash.
The controversy triggered swift political consequences. DMK MP Kanimozhi publicly condemned the remarks, joining a chorus of criticism from activists, public figures, and citizens. Kanimozhi who was among the first to publicly condemn the speech stated, "Minister Ponmudi's recent speech is unacceptable. Regardless of the context, such vulgar remarks are condemnable."
The ruling DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, promptly responded by stripping Ponmudy of his position as Deputy General Secretary of the party. The minister later issued an apology, acknowledging the inappropriateness of his statement. He called it a "lapse in judgement" and sincerely apologised for the words used by him.
