‘Portrayed Muslims as terrorists; gamblers invited to iftar party’: Islamic cleric issues fatwa against actor-politician Vijay

A Muslim cleric in Uttar Pradesh has issued a fatwa against actor-politician Vijay reportedly for portraying Muslims in bad light in his films. The fatwa has also been issued against the actor for inviting gamblers, liquor consumers to his iftar party.

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, president of All India Muslim Jamaat said that the fatwa was issued against the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader based on request from Sunni Muslims from Tamil Nadu. “He has formed a political party and maintained cordial relations with Muslims. However, he has portrayed Muslims in a negative way, as those who spread terrorism in his films. In his iftar party, gamblers and liquor consumers were invited,” ANI reported quoting him.

He added, “Due to all this, Sunni Muslims of Tamil Nadu are angry with him. They asked for a fatwa. So, in my answer, I have issued a fatwa mentioning that Muslims should not stand with Vijay.”

The Muslim cleric has earlier issued a fatwa against New Year celebrations. He had also kicked up a row claiming Mahakumbh was being conducted in waqf land.

Actor Vijay launched his political party in Tamil Nadu recently. His party will contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls and has vowed to unseat Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in power in the state. Vijay has always voiced in favour of minority rights. His party recently moved the Supreme Court against the Waqf Amendment Act. It is part of the bunch of pleas being heard by the Supreme Court challenging the Act. The apex court will continue to hear the matter on Thursday.
