Sacked teachers hold sit-in, seek PM’s intervention

A group of sacked, “qualified” teachers and education workers from West Bengal held a symbolic sit-in at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday.

They have sought intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu and MPs to restore their jobs. The protest — held between 2 pm and 5 pm — was led by members of the ‘Jogyo Shikshak Shikshika Odhikar Manch’ (Qualified Teachers’ Rights Platform).

The protesters had lost their jobs, following the SC’s recent order that scrapped the 2016 West Bengal School Service Commission panel, affecting 25,753 appointments.

“We were investigated by the CBI and other agencies, and given a clean chit. Yet, we are being punished. Why should we lose our livelihood for corruption committed by someone else?” asked Chinmoy, one of the protesting teachers.
