About the Longest Tunnel In India

This falls on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) route. This engineering marvel is almost 12.77 km long and was built with the help of new tunneling method. It connects the Kashmir valley and other interior parts with rest of the India.

According to Northern Railways officials, the opening of the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section has brought them a step closer to achieving the dream of running a train from the Kashmir valley in the north to Kanyakumari on the southern tip of the country.

The Twin Tunnel

Pai-Khad to Anji Khad is a twin tunnel with a length of 5.099 km. It has two separate tunnels for train running and emergency evacuation. It was built in Sirban dolomite rocks. The tunnel is connected to India’s first cable-stayed bridge and has cross-passages every 375 metres.

“At every 375 metres, a connecting passage between the escape tunnel and T-50 has been made so that the passengers can be brought to the escape tunnel and then, carried to their desired destinations in vehicles,” an official had stated last year.
