Vijay Mallya, is known as a builder of India’s beer market, who made beer as a widely consumed drink in the country. Under his leadership, United Breweries gained a dominant share of the market, increasing India’s beer consumption to 45 crore cases annually. However Mallya monopoly was challenged by an unexpected rival in the Northeast by a Bollywood star Danny Denzongpa.
In 2009, Danny Denzongpa blocked Mallya’s Kingfisher from entering the Northeast beer market. Mallya was trying to acquire Rhino Agencies in Assam to increase his presence in the region. Denzongpa also saw an opportunity in this market and acted fast and acquired Rhino Agencies himself. This move changed the fate for his company, Yuksom Breweries. They started dominating the Northeast by making it the third-largest Indian-owned brewery after Kingfisher and Kimaya.
Denzongpa In Northeast
The Northeast was an untapped market for most major beer brands. Denzongpa acquisition of Rhino Agencies cut Mallya’s ambitions and made Yuksom Breweries as the region’s leading beer producer. Reports from Sikkim Express claimed that the brewery’s contribution to the local economy generated Rs 100 crore annually and employed approximately 250 locals.
