Martyrs’ kin yet to get welfare funds, says Kargil War veteran
Brig Khushal Thakur (retd), a decorated Kargil War hero, who had commanded 18 Grenadiers during the iconic battles of Tololing and Tiger Hill, has raised concern over the non-disbursal of sanctioned welfare funds meant for soldiers and their families in Himachal Pradesh.
Brig Thakur said that despite receiving administrative approval and expenditure sanction from the state government between November 2024 and March 2025, the treasury had not released funds for multiple welfare schemes due to the paucity or non-availability of funds.
Brig Thakur termed the situation as “grave injustice to martyrs and their families”. He said that Himachal Pradesh, known as Veer Bhoomi, must uphold its proud tradition of honouring its bravehearts not just in sentiments, but in action, too.
“These are not just payments – they are solemn commitments of a grateful nation. Delays, especially after government sanction, send a disheartening message to our soldiers and their families,” said Brig Thakur. He added that around 1,100 gallantry award winners and the next of kin of 30 martyrs were awaiting the release of money.
Veterans’ organisations and Army welfare bodies have urged the Finance Department to expedite the release of funds and restore faith in the system that supports those who serve the nation selflessly.
