At 20, Shaik Rasheed becomes Chennai Super Kings’ youngest opener
Shaik Rasheed (20), the youngest-ever opener for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), made a memorable entry into the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday. He scored 27 off 19, which included six boundaries, against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
On his debut, he broke the record held by England’s Sam Curran, who opened for CSK in 2020 at 22.
With a 52-run opening partnership with Rachin Ravindra (37 off 22), Rasheed laid a strong foundation for CSK — leading to the team’s victory.
A talented top-order batsman, he has played for Andhra Pradesh in domestic cricket. Born in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, he made his debut for Andhra Pradesh against Services in the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy.
He made his T20 debut for Andhra Pradesh against Nagaland in the 2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. As the vice-captain of India’s squad for the 2022 U-19 Cricket World Cup, he helped them win the trophy.
Before his IPL debut, he has participated in 19 first-class matches, scoring 1,204 runs at an average of 37. 62.
