Karnataka Truckers Launch Indefinite Strike Over Fuel Costs & Toll Troubles; TN Trucks To Avoid State 'In Solidarity'

Goods transportation across Karnataka came to a grinding halt as thousands of trucks remained off the roads from midnight, following an indefinite strike call by the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association (FOKSLOAA). The protest is aimed at drawing attention to rising fuel prices and ongoing toll-related grievances.

Representing over six lakh members—including truck owners, drivers, and agents—FOKSLOAA is one of the largest transport unions in the state. The strike is expected to severely impact the flow of goods both within Karnataka and to neighboring states, raising concerns over potential disruptions in supply chains and a spike in prices of essential commodities.

Karnataka Transport Strike

Harish Sabharwal, President of the All India Motor Transport Congress, as per PTI said, the early signs indicate strong participation with trucks staying off roads across Karnataka. He further stated that no commercial vehicles from other states will enter Karnataka and likewise trucks from Karnataka will not operate beyond its borders during the protest.

In solidarity, the Federation of Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners’ Association has advised its members to avoid entering Karnataka until the situation stabilizes, reported Times of India.

Key Demands

The truckers' union has flagged a range of issues including the steep rise in diesel prices, which they attribute to an increase in Value Added Tax (VAT). The association claims the fuel cost has surged by Rs 5 per litre over the past nine months, significantly increasing transport expenses.

In a letter circulated to members, the union also cited repeated harassment and extortion at toll booths, the continued presence of border check posts despite the rollout of GST and a proposed hike in vehicle fitness renewal charges for older trucks, as per reports.

Additionally, truckers have raised concerns over operational hurdles caused by restricted entry into Bengaluru city, as well as alleged coercive practices by Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), including unauthorized vehicle seizures and harassment of truck owners.
