Private colleges flout centralised admission norms

Every year, the State Department of Higher Education sends a schedule for admission to under-graduate and post-graduate classes through a centralised portal.

While government colleges follow the schedule in letter and spirit, many private institutions jump the gun and start giving admission to students much before the dates mentioned in the schedule.

SCD Government College, Government College East and GCG College admit the students as per the directions of the department, but the private colleges ask the students to submit fee and other charges much earlier to reserve seats for them.

In absence of any check by regulatory agencies, the government colleges have to suffer at times. Admitting that the practice was going on unchecked, SCD Government College Principal GS Sandhu said the department sends the admission calendar for the centralised admission portal.

“The government colleges are considered best for various streams and also adhere to the department schedule. However, many private colleges start the admission process early. Majority students prefer to take admission in those colleges and also submit fee to secure seats. After the seats in various streams are filled in the private colleges, the students are diverted to government colleges. Due to this, the cut-offs in our colleges come down and many seats remain vacant. We wish to submit that the regulatory authorities should keep a check on the practice,” said the principal, adding that it is the government college that eventually have to suffer.

At the same time, GCG, Ludhiana, Principal Suman Lata, who also officiating head of Government College, East, said it all depended on the quality of education the colleges offered.

“Girl students, who want to study in GCG, wait for their turn to get admission here only. We focus on cleanliness and quality education,” she added. She said last year the college students got 81 university positions in various streams. “The staff has to be dedicated too,” she added.

Archna, a 10+2 passout, said since she came from the Commerce background, she would prefer to do graduation from a private college only. “If I get admission in a particular college, I would go there only,” said the student.

A staff member at a government college said last year many seats in the BA course were left vacant. However, the seats were filled later.
