Fire Safety Week begins in Phagwara

The fire brigade department of the Municipal Corporation, Phagwara, formally inaugurated Fire Safety Week today. The week would be observed nationwide from April 14 to April 20. The week-long campaign aims to promote awareness on fire prevention, preparedness and emergency response, while paying homage to firefighters who have laid down their lives in the line of duty.

MC Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta, informed that Fire Safety Week is observed every year to commemorate the sacrifice of 66 brave firefighters who lost their lives in a devastating fire incident following a plane crash at the Bombay docks (now Mumbai) on April 14, 1944. The event serves as a solemn reminder of the risks faced by fire service personnel and the importance of fire safety for the public. To mark the commencement of this year’s observance, the department, under the leadership of Fire Station Officer Sukhwinder Singh, organised a floral tribute ceremony at the Phagwara Fire Station. Officers and staff of the department also observed a two-minute silence in their memory.

Dr Akshita Gupta also appealed to the public to support the fire department’s operations by ensuring clear access for fire brigade vehicles, particularly in congested market areas.
