Ladakh-based athlete wins 102-km ultra-marathon

Nawang Tsering, a Ladakh-based athlete, won the grueling 102-km ultra-marathon race in The Silk Route Ultra Trail (SRUT) run that concluded this morning at Sarahan. Nawang and other participants crossed the finishing line amidst cheers, symbolising the spirit of determination that defines this iconic event.

All six athletes who completed the 102-km race have qualified for the prestigious World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) 2025, scheduled to take place in Canfranc-Pirineos, Spain, from September 25 to 28. This qualification underscores the high caliber of participants and the challenging nature of the SRUT.

The SRUT 2025, organised by The Himalayan Expedition, commenced on April 11 with a ceremonial flag-off by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla. The athletes navigated the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road during the marathon, facing unpredictable weather conditions including rain and cold temperatures.

Following his win, Nawang said he was determined to continue the race without rest and smash the existing record. He completed the race in 15 hours 31 minutes, while the winner last year had taken over 19 hours to complete the race.
