Online fraud: Police file case after 18 months

One and a half years after a Turkey-based girl was duped by unidentified online fraudsters by way of digital arrest, the Mattewal police here have booked a Madhya Pradesh resident on charges of extortion and other relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A complaint in this regard was lodged by Avtar Singh of Mattewal village in September 2023. Now the police have booked Aakash Mundirya of Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) though no arrest has been made till now.

In his complaint to the police, Avtar Singh said his cousin Sandeep Kaur lives in Italy. He said some unidentified persons duped her of Rs 1 lakh. The unidentified person called to inform her that her brother Dharminder Singh, who lives in Portugal, had killed a resident there and he was currently in jail.

He convinced and got her to transfer Rs 3.5 lakh to his account to get Dharminder released. He said Sandeep Kaur transferred Rs 25,000 four times to the same account.

When they came to know about this, they lodged a complaint with the Mattewal police, acting on which they have now registered a case under Section 308 (2) (extortion), 308 (7) (extortion by threat of accusation of an offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life, etc) and Section 316 (4) (criminal breach of trust by clerk or servant).

The case was registered following the investigation carried out by the SP (D) and taking the opinion of the district attorney in this regard.
